Welcome to Mill Avenue!

Welcome to Mill Avenue, the Greenwich Village of the Desert Southwest. You are currently in a pedestrian area that
is not private property. Tour around our Historic streets. Wander down to the Lake at Tempe Beach Park. Enjoy a day
at the waterfront, located at the foot of the Old Hayden Flour Mill. (Get it, Mill Avenue-Flour Mill, a national landmark.) On the other hand,  take a boat ride, peddle your bike, picnic, or shop. On any given day, several of our cafes have free live music to sooth the savage beast in us all. You want coffee? We got coffee. Liquor, man have we got beer, over 100 flavors. "Arlo Guthric" was on Mill Avenue several years back, and I told him, "You can get any thing you want at Alice's restaurant, excepting Alice!" The variety of restaurants on Mill should be able to satisfy even the most discriminating taste buds, from the the Bamboo Club to Monti's La Casa Vieja, to a wrap at ROLLERZ. Do some leg-work, check the variety.

I will be your guide;  I have been a fixture on Mill Avenue for many years. I, the Mill Avenue Food Critic, am the self-appointed unofficial food critic and mobile concierge. It is more annoying to eat in the wrong place than it is to talk to me. Some of the power brokers in our community might argue that the value of my advice is less than zero, but others have seen the light. We the people own the streets of Mill Avenue, and they are held in trust by the city for our use. So, a big as the Wild West WELCOME to all who came to bask in the warm sun of Beautiful Tempe.

Mill Avenue is more of a "Concept" now than just a few blocks with the same name. Some of the side streets have restaurants and shops that demand your attention. From Living Canvas Tattoos and Dominick's Bicycles at the South end, to Monti's at the corner of Rio Salado. Look to your North and South on all the streets you pass. You might just be missing a little of our magic. People always ask me what the best restaurant on Mill Avenue is and I'm quick to say, "That's a really stupid question." I ask these three questions when trying to decide on a place to eat:
    • How much money can I spend?
    • What am I hungry for?
    • What kind of atmosphere do I prefer?
So, that is where I assume the role of expert witness. In the following pages, I will voice my opinion about each business with joy, love, expertise, and sometimes malice. When you visit a business on Mill Avenue, please be sure to mention that
    "Dennnis Sent Me"
It might be worth a discount at many fine and cool businesses. It might also get you thrown out. Its a risk you just might take." I may be an idiot, but I ain't leading  no hum drum life." The number of bars, restaurants and retail businesses changes because they fail from time to time. Please support any businesses that are here now to help them survive. We appreciate you, and your patronage, and your money, and your presence, and most of all your money!

    Thank you.

P.S. These mini reviews are just what they seem to be, recommendations. Some time in the near future, please look for my by-line coming soon in a major local publication Where at that time I'll elaborate on whatever you read here! A special howdy do to Barbara A special message to people who have read this letter. If you visit the places I mention, ask if there is a benefit in mentioning my name, DENNNIS. If there is great, if not, too bad. It's like I was taught in recovery, " You can't control anyone but YOUR SELF!"  I AM NOT RUNNING FOR MAYOR!
