Tempe City Hall
TEMPE CITY HALL 5th & 6th east of Mill 480-350-8110  City of Tempe
An upside down pyramid? What is odd about this building? It is not the design. It is the fact that the bureaucracy in this town has given the people something so cool to look at. From a distance the design seems somewhat frivolous. Do not let the first impression be the last; walk up to this work of art and get a close-up and personnel experience. It is overwhelming. I waited way too much time to do this myself.
Walk around the forward, leaning, 45-degree walls, and observe the relationship between the reverse lean, and A Mountain, and every other structure, it is visually connected to. Look up a lot. Get involved in the overhead and ponder how that feels. I touched my head to the lines at the corners. It is so much fun; I am surprised the comic strip Zippy the PinHead  hasn't immortalized it yet. I will see what I can do about that! The original design came from a South American Architect. If you have time, enter the portal, take the elevator to the 3rd floor and sign the guest book There are times when you can come away with a collectible Tempe City pen and matching pin .If you ask to see Will Manley, our city manager, a true renaissance man, who writes a column for the Magazine," Booklist", called "THE MANLEY ARTS", you can tell him how you feel about the structure.  He might invite you to look out the windows; pretend he is not busy, tell him where your are from and that I sent you to experience the art that is our unique city hall.
